Miniature Obsession
Instructor: Lisa Krohn/ Rob Ball
The main idea about my space is to celebrate miniature obsession. Instead of taking the concept of miniature literally and depicting things small, I took a challenge to go different direction to understand how miniature can be interpreted differently and more conceptually. My main perception of miniature is scale juxtaposition. In order to experience being miniature or something is miniature, there should be another element next to it to be juxtaposed in scale. And the approach is playing and distorting perspectives that allows an illusion of dramatic scale change of the space. That is why the whole structure is built in many planes angled randomly where many emerging points happen. Juxtaposing scale and view point between the scale model and the space and even between the space and life-size person is interesting to consider. The atmosphere wants to be unrealistic, abstract and simple in complexity by being constructed with simple circular and triangle shapes and limited color choices.
What happens inside the structure is that there are small areas all over the space where scale people can focus and feel the smallness of the spaces. There is an infinite traveling whole that goes under the ground. On the ceiling, two domes give larger view of perspectives to the sky. After all, even the scale model feels the whole space is humongous, it is peeked through a magnifying view point by a life-size person as a piece of object.
Looking from outside, the overall shape of the structure resembles a cactus related to where it is imagined to be located- which is open-wide desert. It has organic and structured qualities at the same time. My piece has to engage with light and shadow from its environment to be completed. Light reflection bouncing between planes and black and white gradation is part of experiencing yourself is miniature in the space. In the end, picturing this is in desert as a tiny object picking up all sorts of light sources from sunrise, daytime, sunset to nighttime is the ultimate view of this space or object that I expect.
