DESIGN DIALOGUES 3 - CHRIS CHAFE

PING

Instructor: Anne Burdick/ Ben Hooker

Chris Chafe is a musician, a composer, and a designer who collects and manipulates sound as data. As we collect visual elements to create visual information, sonification is the way of him creating meaning and information out of sounds. One of his examples shown in the colloquium, PING is the most interesting piece to me to be introduced to the  world of sonification.

Chris Chafe explains about his work PING

However, unlike his verbal explanation of his sonification happening in the piece PING, the actual production exhibited in the museum is a little disappointing. To me, it is more fascinating  to hear and imagine the piece based on how I understand his explanation rather than witnessing the actual object generating sounds in a boring way.

MY PING

My re-interpretation of PING

I decide to depict Chris Chafe's sonification of his piece PING in a motion based image. In the end, I have slightly different outcome from his based on my naive understanding of how the sonification occupies.
