This is not a knob
HOLD MY HANDS
Instructor: Philip Van Allen
In this project, I try to apply the tedious motion of a knob rotating left to right, or right to left to create interesting, yet sort of strange interaction that requires the user's strong physical engagement. This simple rotating motion of a knob reminds me of this one exercising machine that the user has to stand on its platform and keep twisting his/her waist by holding an handle and fixing his/her upper body. My idea starts from this mechanism to develop a concept that considers tangible interaction and narrative content. I create a conversation situation between a face projected on the wall and the user on the platform. Instead of holding handle, the user holds two hands sticking out of the wall. As the user twists, the face follows the movement diagonally and eye-contacts with the user as if they are having a chat.
By being distracted by the face that the user is facing, the whole exercising doesn't feel too tired. But my project doesn't want to be just an exercise purposed machine. It is more about its content of talking and interacting with a virtual person. Standing on corner area, looking at the wall, holding fake plastic hands, and twisting ...These are all the elements that work together and imply some meaning.
